To request help, you and the and test centre manager must complete a Reasonable adjustments Request Form (PDF, 0.1 MB) and return it to OTEsupport@oup.com

Please note the following information:

  • The following reasonable adjustments must be requested using the Reasonable Adjustments Request Form, along with any supporting evidence, at least 6 weeks before the test date. See section 5 of the Reasonable Adjustments Policy.
    • Extra time

    • Individual test session
    • Physical testing environment
    • Access to the test room

    • Display option: low contrast (pastel)
    • Display option: high contrast
    • Reading support device
    • Hand-held text magnifier
  • If supporting evidence is required, it should be in English or an English translation should be provided. It is your responsibility as the test taker to provide this.
  • If your chosen test centre cannot accommodate your request, you should still work with them to complete and submit the form. This will be sent by your chosen test centre to Oxford University Press, who will use this information to try to find an alternative centre.
  • Once the request has been processed, Test Centres securely dispose of the form and related paperwork as confidential waste.

Display options

The Oxford Test of English is available with different display options. You can take the Oxford Test of English in high contrast (light text on a dark background) or pastel (dark text on a pastel background).

Enlarged text

  • You can take the test with enlarged text size (24 pixels).
  • Please note that enlarged text size may increase the need for scrolling on the screen.
  • You can view the above display and text options in the online demo.
What to do next:
  1. You, as the test taker, should take the online demo to decide which display options are best for you.
  2. Once in the test session, you can adjust the visual display options in the test platform.

If you have physical access requirements (e.g. wheelchair access or adapted seating requirements), please describe them on the Reasonable adjustments Request Form (PDF, 0.1 MB). If your chosen Test Centre is not able to accommodate your physical access requirements, the completed form will be sent to Oxford University Press who will help find a suitable Test Centre.

What to do next:
  1. You, as the test taker, should take the online demo.
  2. If applicable, you should then complete the Reasonable adjustments Request Form (PDF, 0.1 MB), give it to the Test Centre, and book your test at least six weeks in advance.
  3. The Test Centre should then send the completed form to otesupport@oup.com.

You can request extra time to complete the Reading and / or Writing modules of the Oxford Test of English. Extra time will be added to the whole time limit of the relevant module. 25% extra time is available for each module.

All requests for extra time must be made in advance and supported by medical evidence. Please note that extra time is not currently available for the Speaking or Listening modules.

Private test sessions

You may be able to take the test in a private test session with a single invigilator. All requests for a private test session must be supported by medical evidence.

If your chosen test centre is not able to accommodate your request for a private room, please still send your completed form to the Test Centre, who will then forward to Oxford University Press who will help find a suitable Test Centre.

Breaks between modules

The Oxford Test of English includes four modules: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The whole test takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

You can request rest breaks between the test modules if this would be helpful to you. All requests for breaks between modules must be supported by medical evidence.

What to do next:

To request extra time, a private test session, or breaks between modules, you will need to provide evidence of your condition (e.g., a medical certificate). To do this:

  1. Get supporting evidence of the condition. Supporting evidence must:
    • Be written by a qualified doctor, psychologist, or other professional.
    • Include the name, professional qualification(s), and address of the person providing the evidence.
    • Be in English or professionally translated into English from an original document in another language.
  2. Complete the Reasonable adjustments Request Form (PDF, 0.1 MB)
  3. Give the form and supporting evidence to their Test Centre and book your test at least six weeks in advance.
    • For temporary conditions, you will need evidence written in a suitable time period to confirm that the condition is still valid.
    • For permanent conditions, there is no time requirement.
  4. Your chosen Test Centre should then send the completed form and accompanying medical evidence to otesupport@oup.com.

For the options below, you do not need to fill in the Reasonable adjustments Request Form (PDF, 0.1 MB). You can register with your chosen Test Centre in the usual way and inform them on the test day about your needs.

Reading support device

You may use your own text isolation reading card – also known as a 'text window' – to aid focus on the specific area of text you are reading. This must be provided by you as the test taker and approved by the Test Centre on the day of the test. For security reasons, any reading cards must be free of writing.

Hand-held text magnifier

TYou may use your own non-electronic hand-held text magnifier to add focus on specific text. This must be provided by you as the test taker and approved by the Test Centre on the day of the test.

Hearing difficulties

The Oxford Test of English is taken on a computer and all test takers wear individual headsets and can adjust the volume on the computer to meet the ideal level for their needs in the Speaking and Listening test modules. There is no audio in the Reading or Writing modules.

Reasonable Adjustments Policy

For more information about Oxford University Press's ongoing commitment to making the Oxford Test of English accessible to as many test takers as possible, see the Reasonable Adjustments Policy.
