Job opportunities in tourism encourage younger members of society to move from the countryside. As a result of this, traditional cultures often disappear.

Tourism can often have a positive social impact. For example, local people may find opportunities for sport and entertainment, since new leisure facilities are often created in tourist destinations. These kinds of facilities also create more jobs and therefore can improve the quality of life for local people. In addition, it is possible for tourists and locals to learn from each other, as a result of meeting people from different places and cultures.
Due to the growth of tourism, however, there may be disruption to the traditional way of life. Many local people leave farming in the countryside. These are often younger adults, who move to cities or tourist resorts to work. Because of this, often only the older population remains, and traditional communities in the countryside may disappear. Owing to these kinds of changes, many tourist destinations are now encouraging travellers to visit traditional communities and spend money there, as well as in modern resorts.
