Ken Hyland

Ken Hyland is a well-known researcher in the field of academic discourse, writing and language education, and has published over 20 books. After graduating with a degree in Sociology from the University of Warwick, Ken went overseas to teach English. First as a volunteer in the Sudan, and then in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Along the way he got an MA from the University of Birmingham and a PhD from the University of Queensland. After 26 years travelling the world, he was offered a professorship at the University of London, returning to Hong Kong in 2009. He was the founding co-editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes and was co-editor of the journal Applied Linguistics for five years. He is the Head of the Centre for Applied English Studies and holds the Chair of Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong.
